If you drink green tea regularly chances are you have a great set of gums. According to a recent study, those who drink green tea appear to possess greater periodontal health than those who do not drink green tea. Green tea possesses many health benefits because it is loaded with polyphenols. It is a good anti oxidant and also destroys malignant cancer cells leaving healthy cells intact and untouched.

The health benefit of green tea regarding increased health of gums is directly proportional to the amount of green tea that is consumed by the person. The more a person drinks green tea, the better it is for them. Periodontal disease causes inflamed gums and the bone structure supporting the teeth are also inflamed. Inflamed gums are linked to several other diseases such as heart diseases, accumulation of plaque in the arteries thereby causing them to harden as well as diabetes.

The health benefits of green tea have long been studied by researchers. It is often spoken as a natural remedy for cardio vascular diseases. The LDL cholesterol level is lowered by regular consumption of green tea thereby reducing the risk of stroke as well as cardiac diseases. Green tea also promotes the production of HDL cholesterol and helps reduce plaque formation in the arteries. The antioxidant present in green tea, called catechin, maybe at work to reduce the incidence of periodontal disease in those who consume the tea regularly. Generally antioxidants reduce inflammation, and periodontal disease is simply inflamed gums caused by bacteria in the mouth.

Our mouths are teeming with bacteria, even in normal, healthy individuals. The bacteria along with the saliva and other particles present in the mouth form a sticky and colorless substance on the teeth called plaque. Regular brushing and flossing may help get rid of the plaque to a great extent, but the plaque that cannot be removed can harden and form tartar which harbors millions of bacteria. Tartar causes the gums to inflame and should be removed only by professional cleaning.

Maintaining healthy gums is an important part of maintaining the overall health of the body. Inflamed gums may give rise to several other diseases if they are not treated in time. Therefore regular drinking of green tea is of great benefit because it is of immense value in keeping periodontal diseases in check.
